9/11 Anniversary: Fly Flags at Half-Staff, Observe Moment of Silence

Ohioans are encouraged to fly the flag at half-staff on Tuesday in remembrance of those who lost their lives in the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001.

Sept. 11 has been declared Patriot Day and the National Day of Service and Remembrance. In a proclamation to the country, President Barack Obama has asked citizens to remember the “abiding spirit of compassion” that filled the nation after the attacks by volunteering in the upcoming days.

“Even the simplest act of kindness can be a way to honor those we have lost, and to help build stronger communities and a more resilient Nation. By joining together on this solemn anniversary, let us show that America's sense of common purpose need not be a fleeting moment, but a lasting virtue -- not just on one day, but every day,” the resolution reads.

Ohio Gov. John Kasich has also issued a resolution, asking all Ohioans to observe Patriot Day and the National Day of Service and Remembrance and to fly all U.S. and Ohio flags on public grounds at half-staff from sunrise until sunset on Sept. 11. Kasich’s resolution also asks all Ohioans to observe a moment of silence at 8:46 a.m. on Tuesday.
