Winds Down Limbs, Power Lines in Westlake

Wednesday's storm left thousands without power all over Northeast Ohio.

About 200 Westlake residents were still without power Thursday afternoon following high winds and pouring rain on Wednesday.Among the damage was four downed power lines and 14 fallen trees or limbs, said Westlake Police Cpt. Guy Turner. Officers closed Westwood Road at Clague Road due to a fallen power line at about 5:15 p.m.

The fallen power line caused another outage at the intersection Thursday afternoon.

Nearly 36,000 Cleveland area residents were still without power around 3:30 p.m. Thursday, down from 64,000 during the storm said Mark Durbin, spokesman for The Illuminating Company. About 500 homes in Westlake lost power throughout the storm.

Winds topping 65 mph were recorded at Hopkins airport by the National Weather Service.

Durbin said that damage in Ohio and eastern Pennsylvania is so bad that residents in some places could be without power until Saturday morning.

“We’re trying as best we can to get everyone back on by tomorrow, but we’re trying to be realistic,” Durbin said. “Due to the damage and the sheer numbers of people without power, it might be Saturday before everyone is back on.
