It’s tempting, but not legal.

A 26-year-old Center Ridge Road man was cited after he burned a 40-foot pile of brush on the morning of April 7. The fire was so large it could be seen a half mile away, Westlake Police Capt. Guy Turner said.

The Westlake Fire Department put out the fire and the man will receive a summons for Open Burning Prohibited violation.

The city of Westlake has a strict policy on what can and can’t be burned.

Bonfires or campfires are permitted in approved containers/fire ring, and outdoor fireplace equipment if certain conditions are met, including distance from structures, having an adult in attendance and a fire extinguisher nearby.

EPA permits are required in some circumstances. Pat, a secretary at the Westlake Fire Department said permits are need for bonfires that are  larger than 3x5, as is the case for the annual bonfire at Westlake High School and that some churches hold for youth groups.

“If it’s in their backyards, they are allowed to have a bonfire,” Pat said. “It needs to be totally dry wood; no leaves or garbage is allowed. You cannot burn leaves in the city of Westlake.”

Pat said a person could be cited if there is excessive smoke also, which could happen from burning wet wood and wet leaves.

Outdoor fireplaces, hibachis from home improvement stores need to be at least 15 feet from any structure or flammable material.

If you are a neighbor and see a large bonfire, the time to call the fire department is when the fire is still engaged.

“Call 9-1-1 and a fire truck will put it out,” the fire department representative said. “If you call when the fire is out, there is nothing we can do.”

If excessive smoke, garbage or leaves are being burned, residents can call 9-1-1 or Westcom Dispatch at 440-871-3322.
