Storms Blow Through Northeast Ohio

Damage was minimal in Westlake, but nearby towns had damage.

Early morning storms blew through Northeast Ohio Thursday, leaving thousands in the area without power.

Westlake suffered some minimal damage including a few power outages during the night. A tree limb came down near the rectory on the property, bringing Dominion East Ohio trucks and the Westlake Fire Department.

“No one was hurt,” said Cpt. Guy Turner with the Westlake police.

Two traffic lights also went out at about 1:15 a.m. on Crocker Road at Detroit and Schwartz roads. The lights were back up and running at about 6:30 a.m., Turner said.

Police also checked out about a dozen alarms at businesses and homes which were activated by the power outage.

“We know darn well it’s not a break-in, but we check them all out,” Turner said.

Auxiliary police officer Rick Grane said he also saw a few downed telephone lines during the night.

At 9:15 a.m., FirstEnergy was reporting fewer than 500 residences without power.

Other cities were hit harder by the storm like Avon Lake, where a tree fell through the roof of a home on Morewood Parkway. Fortunately, no one was injured, but about 5,000 residences are without power.
