Fake Grandson Needs Money In Bolivia

An 81-year-old Westlake woman got a call from a man claiming to be her grandson traveling in Bolivia Jan. 23. The man said he needed money because he had been in a car accident. The woman wired $3,000 to the caller from a local drugstore. The next day, the man called again, asking for another $2,700. This time, the woman went to the bank, where the teller canceled the transaction after hearing the woman's story. The woman's real grandson was at home in North Olmsted the whole time.

Phony Traveling Grandson Tries A Different Mark

A Westlake man received the same sort of call from a fake grandson in Bolivia who needed $3,000 on Jan. 25. The man went to the drug store to send the money, but a clerk explained what was happening to the man, who changed his mind and did not send the money.

Man Falls, Can't Get Up, Goes To Jail

A 49-year-old Bay Village man went on a walk at about 9:15 p.m. Jan. 23, and passed out on a treelawn near the Crocker Road railroad crossing. The suspect tried to stand up when a passing officer found him, but he fell into the street. Police arrested the man for disorderly conduct intoxicated. While in jail, the man was singing classic rock songs, and discussing his 5-year prison stretch for a felony operating a vehicle intoxicated, police said.
