Hearing for 'Dangerous Dog' Set for Thursday

Pomeranian was killed by Bullmastiff as it headed to the Spooky Pooch Parade on Saturday.

The owner of a dog believed to have killed a Pomeranian headed for the Spooky Pooch Parade may have to remove it from the city.

A hearing is set to take place at Lakewood City Hall at 8:30 a.m. Thursday to determine whether restrictions should be placed on the Bullmastiff — or, if the dog should be altogether removed from the city.

The animal control officer who responded to the incident could not be reached for comment, but Capt. Gary Stone of the Lakewood Police Department said that the incident took place in the 1480 block of St. Charles Avenue at around 1:30 p.m. Saturday.

The dogs and their owners were headed to the Spooky Pooch Parade, about a block away, he said, when a Bullmastiff and Rottweiler — both on leashes — attacked.

The Bullmastiff “grabbed the Pomeranian and swung it around by the neck,” Stone said.

No charges have been filed, but a citation was issued.

Stone said that a hearing officer will hear the case on Thursday.

“They can decide whether there is restriction placed on the dog, or removed if it should be from the city,” he said. “It’s all up the to the hearing officer.”

Patrick, euthanizing the dog does not solve the problem. Solving the problem starts with the owner. She can go out the next day and come home with a new dog, which is likely to have the same issues as the first. Breaking the cycle of this behavior begins with an expert evaluation and a professional training program.

Thursday, 8:30 am. and open to the public. 2nd floor law dept. conference room. This could get good. Pro BSL Lakewood City Hall, guess I already know how this is going to turn out. I would say that the powers to be already have the choices made. This is just for show.

@Colin McEwen- Are you going to be there to report what really goes down in an unbiased media way? I would rather hear it thru you than city hall.
