Blizzard Safety Tips from the Red Cross

Check out these safety tips for before, during and after winter storms.

Northeast Ohio, including Brecksville, is expected to see heavy snow Wednesday afternoon and evening.

The American Red Cross has a few tips for what to do during and after the storm, including what to do if there’s a power outage:

  • Try not to travel, but if you must, keep an emergency supplies kit in your car. And if you are going outside, dress in warm, lightweight layers. More winter driving tips can be found here.
  • Don’t forget about carbon monoxide. Don’t use generators, camp stoves or other gasoline, charcoal, natural gas or propane devices in the house, garage or other enclosed spaces.
  • If the power goes off, try to keep the refrigerator and freezer closed as long as possible to help preserve the food in there. A closed refrigerator should keep food cold for about four hours.
  • Turn off and unplug unnecessary electronics, as well as any electronics or appliances you were using when the power went out, to prevent a surge when the electricity is restored.
  • Use flashlights, not candles, to reduce the risk of fire during an outage.
