Dorothy J. Bartko, 90, Mother of Four

Was active in volunteer work

Dorothy J. (Deemer) Bartko, 90, of Westlake, died Sept. 17 at St. John Medical Center after a brief illness.

She was born Oct. 7, 1921, in Cleveland to the late Charles F. and Irene J. (Riley) Deemer. Following her graduation from West Tech High School in Cleveland, she worked as a secretary at White Motors and Bettcher Industries. After raising her family, she worked for several local attorneys and later for real estate appraiser John Costello.

Bartko baked weekly for the nuns while her children attended St. Charles Borromeo School and was active in community service, being named Woman of the Year by the Parma YMCA.

Bartko is survived by her children Nancy (Bob) Schneider of Amherst, Diane of San Diego,  William A. of Corrales, NM, and Andrew K. (Ellen Hugo) of North Olmsted; grandsons Dan (Amy) Schneider and Rob Schneider; and great-grandsons Stewart and Gus.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Andrew R. Bartko, brother Edward Deemer and sister Margaret Deemer.

Calling hours are from 6 to 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 21, at Busch Funeral Home, 32000 Detroit Road, Avon. A funeral service, conducted by Becky McClelland and Ann Beck of St. Ladislas, will follow calling hours at 7 p.m.

A private interment will be at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery in Rittman.
