Advice Column

Needing some advice? Then I am here to help!

Hello,

My name is Jessica. I have been wanting to start an advice column. So, I think this would be a great chance. :)

If you need advice then I am all ears! I know how it feels to just want somebody to talk to but you can't ask your family or friends sometimes. .. Sometimes you just want a pair of fresh ears, nobody to judge you or to put you down.

So, write to me and I will help you the best I can.

Welcome to Patch, Jessica! I will look forward to reading your advice.

Thank you Brandon! I look forward to writing :)

Jessica, how do you deal with people that quickly resort to name calling and stereotyping when you have a disagreement with them?
I am relatively new to the patch and have been called all kinds of names because I have a conservative view point. While I don’t feel that I am dumb, stupid, a nut job, greedy, uneducated, racist, can’t read, only watch Fox news, kick puppies, hate women, hate the poor, am a liar, etc…others on the patch with different opinions feel the need to name call. Sometimes I have to cry myself to sleep at night.

"I am relatively new to the patch and have been called all kinds of names..."
Wow...way to play the victim, whiner. Pot, have you met kettle? *stand by for the denial in 3, 2,....*
Richard Hollis August 28, 2012 at 03:32 pm
There are some on Patch who seem to feel that is the way to get their point and opinion across. Childish.
Paxton Crenshaw August 28, 2012 at 03:36 pm
just when i thought this patch thing couldn't devolve any further.
MZ August 28, 2012 at 03:36 pm
At what point have I called you or anyone else a name? There is my denial that you asked for.
Now I'm off to go watch some fox news, count my money, and later I have that tea party rally to go to where I can be surrounded by my fellow racists and homophobes. Do I sense a "dog whistle" in your pot and kettle reference?

Hi Jessica, welcome!
Kimber Malloy August 28, 2012 at 04:44 pm
Hi Jess-just stay away from politics or the crazies who surf 24/7 will find you. Good luck. I usually have lots of questions, next time i'll ask you.

@Jessica, how would you suggest that animal lovers can help repeal the 'pitbull ban' here in Lakewood, when city officials only listen to 'dogsbite.org' and not the people they serve...We need help.
Jessica Brown August 28, 2012 at 10:46 pm
@Steve
Yes I heard that in Lakewood you are not allowed to have pitbulls...I am from Cleveland and there they have to have a mussel. But, maybe you could get some people together and sign a paper saying how you guys think it's okay to have pitbulls in Lakewood. The reason why they mostely banned them is because they are known for being kinda mean. But, people need to also know it's the way you raise them. Try to talk to people in your area who would sign and say it's okay to have them. See if that works. Let people like the news know that you are doing this and then maybe they would get involved and maybe air it on television so it could be known and helped.
Jessica Brown August 28, 2012 at 10:47 pm
@Kimber Malloy, Yeah I have already had some weird people on here asking about stuff that you can tell is fake. And, I would love to help you anytime :)
Jessica Brown August 28, 2012 at 10:48 pm
@Kaye Spector, Thank you :)

hi! just wondering what qualifications you have that allow you to be a advice columnist?
Paxton Crenshaw August 29, 2012 at 03:00 am
"muzzle", not "mussel". "mostly", not "mostely". "kind of", not kinda. your sentence structure is even worse than your spelling. take MY advice - brush up on your English before you embark on your little adventure in journalism!

Seriously, Can I ride through and whisper.
This country is about to pull into another recession. Does anyone here know what $17trillion debt is? Honestly, do any of you here CARE?
Allison Smalley August 29, 2012 at 09:33 am
Yeah! Another forum for the BSL argument! I am not sure 'signing a paper'; I believe we call them petitions, will be that effective. We need a tidal wave movement to get this through council as they have proven in the past not to listen to the public. I do not have the answers (or even a suggestion at this point). But we have to do something! And … they are not ‘known to be kinda mean’. They are perceived to be mean. Please watch your words to avoid perpetuating this myth.
Steve.. help me out bud! Let’s start a BSL blog!
Kimber Malloy August 29, 2012 at 11:44 am
I told you the crazies would find you, always goes to politics and religion-then they really get crazy. Best advice is ignore them, kinda like we do in a bar, same kind of people. Its only way to make them go away on here. Plus who has time to (actually i do but why) read over and respond to 100 comments on like 100 articles? And yes right and left wing crazies-i NEVER do buy i drink so sorry
I.M. Wright August 29, 2012 at 12:10 pm
I never said you called me any names (but then again, unlike many hear who check into Patch numerous times a day, every day, I don't -- so maybe you did respond). But, nice attempt to deflect. Or indicate you can't read.
You're guilty of name-calling and/or stereotyping, hypocrite. Need to carry on with being a hypocrite now that you've been called out? Or are you just going to zip it?
I.M. Wright August 29, 2012 at 12:13 pm
At least it's a new blogger who doesn't feel the need to add their "local voice" to national politics. This site is polluted with enough of those wannabes.
It would be great if these so-called "local voices" would actually BLOG about LOCAL stuff.
MZ August 29, 2012 at 12:29 pm
I.M. I think I'll keep responding. You provide me with some excellent free entertainment.
I guess I can't read, or perhaps just can't comprehend your high level intellect and writing style. I clearly misunderstood your pot and kettle reference. I thought you were indicating that I called you, or others "all kinds of names" which I have not. Since I am slow, perhaps you can elaborate so I can have a better understanding of why I am a hypocrite.
Teresa K. August 29, 2012 at 03:32 pm
Jessica: good luck with your new advice column : ) I think you need to start with telling folks a little bit about yourself.... age, city you live in, educational background and perhaps a life experience that you feel makes you more apt to give good advice.
Also: if one writes you needing advice: do we post it HERE or do we email you? How do we write to you anonymously and get advice on the blog? will you change our names? Do we make another account to protect our identities? I think you will make a great advice-giver and it appears you truly care about people. As you can see from some posts, you may need to be more specific on what you are doing with your blog. It looks like it has become a dumping ground of sorts. Good luck !
Teresa K. August 29, 2012 at 03:41 pm
MZ: I hope you are kidding about crying yourself to sleep at night over a name someone on the Patch calls you.
These people dont even KNOW you. Dont let their name calling bother you. I just laugh and realize I must have touched a nerve with my comment. Your opinion is yours -- embrace it and keep posting.
Sean Gaffney August 29, 2012 at 07:31 pm
This is a great question! I too have this problem. Most people who know me think I'm a pretty good guy and I rarely swerve to run down the homeless begging on the streets of Fairlawn, but whenever I post on KentPatch my neighbors call me all sorts of names like Chimp-Hitler. I hold three masters degrees yet they tell me I am an immoral degenerate idiot that should have been aborted. When I tell them I was born before 1971 so it wasn't an option they say "That is terrible, thank the Goddess those times are over". What can I do tomake friends with these people?
Sean Gaffney August 29, 2012 at 07:40 pm
I agree. One of the biggest local problems here in Kent is over-the-hill liberals and aging hippies that spout off and refuse to accept that any progress has been made since 1973. Is there any way we can make them go away? Or at least shut up? Once they are gone, maybe they can turn the Kent Natural Foods Coop into a Safeway.
Steve August 29, 2012 at 08:56 pm
Sorry to tell you this Jessica, but pitbulls do not, I repeat do not have to be muzzled in Cleveland. Please give accurate information if you really want to help people. P.S. I worked on the State bill that Cleveland modeled themselves after. Lakewood just refuses to accept that, and a lot of other things...
Steve August 29, 2012 at 08:59 pm
@Allison, I would if I could but I can't. I cannot have Lakewoods best, beating down my door for just cause.
Teresa K. August 29, 2012 at 09:39 pm
@sean: regarding making friends with these people who call you names and such:
why would you want to be friends with people like that? I wouldnt. (If you hold 3 masters degrees, I am betting most people don't understand what you're posting. : ) They say intellects have a hard time being related to in life. Maybe you are on a different level intellectually and people don't "get" your comments ?)
MZ August 30, 2012 at 12:54 am
I sleep quite well. My sarcasm wasn't clear enough.
The name calling is actually quite amusing to me as is how mad some get at someone they don't know who just happens to have a different opinion or belief system.
Kaye Spector (Editor) August 30, 2012 at 01:33 pm
Teresa, thank you for that thoughtful comment.

I think Enterprise was going to move there, since BMW is moving to where Enterprise is.

What about center ridge and clague (currently an old gas station)?
Carol Cordova June 17, 2013 at 07:40 pm
