Former Bay Village Mayor Is 'Survivor Speaker' at This Weekend's Relay

This weekend’s Relay for Life at the Westlake Rec Center includes a full schedule of events that will start with a 12:30 p.m. survivors' brunch with the Carrabba’s restaurant truck.

Rick Grane, this year’s organizers, said that in addition to Carrabba’s, Mitchell’s Ice Cream has offered to provide desert.

“We’re going to start with brunch at the rec center,” Grane said. “At 2 p.m. there will be an opening speech.”

Former Bay Village mayor and cancer survivor Tom Jelepis is scheduled to offer the opening speech.

The 16-year mayor, diagnosed in 2010, started a non-profit, Friends from the Start, in 2012.

Grane said the Relay, which is the American Cancer Society’s main fundraiser, will be drawing many from the Bay Village community as well.

“We have a lot of people coming from Bay,” Grane said.

He added that the focus this year is on caregivers.

Grane said members of the Bay and Westlake high school Key Clubs will be participating.

The Relay is from July 13-14.
