5 Things to Know Today: Thursday, May 19

Monday's Board of Education meeting, 'Pirates of the Caribbean' premiere, more rainy weather, boys lacrosse kicks off postseason, the Cleveland Indians and 'Pint Night' at Champps.

1) To prepare for bargaining sessions with the WTA and OAPSE, the convened for an executive session at the Westlake City Schools administrative building yesterday. During the board’s May 9 work session, Superintendent Dr. Dan Keenan and treasurer Mark Pepera proposed to cut operating expenses by $950,000 and Personnel by $1.12 million to counter the $2.1 million in proposed state funding losses that could hit the district during the 2011-12 school year. More will become known on the local level at next Monday’s regular meeting at the high school cafeteria where hundreds are expected to attend. 

2) ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides’ will open this Friday May 20 at . This time, Captain Jack Sparrow and his band of misfit sailors are in search of the fountain of youth. The upcoming premiere will mark the fourth installment to Disney’s swashbuckling Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. Starring Johnny Depp, Penelope Cruz, Geoffrey Rush, Ian McShane and Keith Richards. 

3) Residents in the greater Cleveland area have seen rain on 54 of the last 62 days and, unfortunately, Mother Nature wants to keep the stormy streak going through today. There’s a 50 percent chance of showers with a high of 65 degrees and a low of 54, so don’t forget to bring the umbrella.

4) The Westlake boys varsity lacrosse team will have home field advantage tonight as they face off against the Perrysberg High Yellow Jackets at 6 p.m. The Demons will need to be at the top of their game as this is the first round of the postseason. 

5) The Cleveland Indians will wrap up a four game road trip against the Chicago White Sox tonight at 8:10 p.m. Since they’re away, you may want to think about heading up to for the game to enjoy a discounted “Pint Night” draft beer.
