Nordson Corp.'s New Green Headquarters Has Benefits For Environment And Employees

Manufacturing company expects $5 million building to earn LEED certification.

Nordson Corp.’s new corporate headquarters may be only a few hundred yards away from its old home, but the 28,000 square-foot building is a whole new kind of office building.

The company,  a manufacturer of precision dispensing equipment for applying industrial liquid and powder coatings, adhesive and sealants, moved 51 corporate employees to the new building at 28601 Clemens Rd. in November.

The new building was a sustainable endeavor with high-efficiency heating and cooling, environmentally friendly landscaping to reduce storm water runoff and a heat-reflecting roof. Most rooms have floor-to-ceiling windows to let in natural light and sensors to control indoor lighting.

“The light sensors adjust lighting based on how much light is coming through the window,” said Nordson spokesman Scott Wilburn. “It’s a system that’s smart enough to know how much light is coming through the window and how much additional light is needed in a room.”

Contractor Ozanne even recycled 95 percent of the waste generated during construction. Nordson expects to earn a Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED) certification later this year. The certification takes not only green factors into account, but also considers the quality of the working environment.

“It’s the sustainability and the benefit of people using the building,” Wilburn said. “We’ve already gotten compliments from employees that it’s easier to interact in this space. And the natural light makes a big difference. I can attest to that personally.”

The building was designed by Clark & Post Architects, Inc. of Lorain with consulting architects Doty & Miller Architects of Cleveland, who specialize in green design. While the new headquarters came with a hefty $5 million price tag, Wilbrun said Nordson Corp. plans to earn it all back in energy savings.

“The added cost for this over a regular building is 10 to 15 percent, but we’re expecting to recoup that over time,” Wilburn said. “You’ll recoup that plus you’re doing something good for the environment.”

Nordson sold its former headquarters at 28500 Clemens Road in 2008 to Hyland Software. The two companies had been occupying different floors of the building, but when Nordson moved some of its employees to other sites around the country, the company needed less space.

“They needed to expand and we were looking to move out,” Wilburn said.  “The building wasn’t designed as a headquarters. It was more of a research and development, information technology place.”

Nordson Corp. employs just under 4,000 people worldwide.
