Hyland Gets 10-Year Tax Abatement for Five Seasons Building Plans

Company sought 100%, 15 year abatement and received less.

Hyland Software, which recently purchased the Five Seasons fitness center on Clemens Road to convert it into a new technology center, will be seeking a tax abatement for renovations.

Although the company initially request a 15-year, 100 percent abatement, Westlake City Hall approved a smaller one.

Hyland purchased the fitness center for $11.135 million on March 26. The property is adjacent to the current Hyland campus.

“We recommend they receive a 75 percent abatement for only 10 years,” Mayor Dennis Clough said. The Westlake School District is opposing the abatement.

“We did receive a letter from the schools indicating that they would prefer we not provide that incentive, but after further consideration, and recognizing the importance of keeping Hyland Software in our city, we felt that it would be advantageous to offer them this incentive even though it’s less than what they originally requested,” Clough said.

Council president Michael Killeen said there was a prior abatement request still active when Hyland was planning to build a new office building.

That request was for a 75 percent tax abatement for 10 years for a new $17.6 million office building planned for the Hyland Campus on Clemens Road. The abatement was through a Community Reinvestment Area. Hyland has since said it has scrapped plans for a new building in lieu of the purchase of the Five Seasons building.

Killeen said that would have been a higher abatement because of how buildings are valued.

In March, Hyland, which employs approximately 1,100, announced it would purchased the Five Seasons building.
