Cargill Issues Ground Turkey Recall

Customers can return products to stores for refunds

Cargill Value Added Meats Retail has  issued a voluntary recall on about 185,000 pounds of ground turkey products.

According to a press release from the Cargill company, the recall affects 85 percent lean ground turkey produced at the Springdale, Ark. facility on Aug. 23, 24, 30 and 31. The facility is the same one that was involved in a  

According to the release, the U.S. Department of Agriculture found the same strain of Salmonella Heidelberg that was present in the previous recall during a review of the facility. There was one test sample that was positive for the bacteria. Cargill has voluntarily stopped production of ground turkey products at that location until further measures can be taken and approved by the USDA.

There are no known illnesses associated with this batch. The previous recall came after a salmonella outbreak that sickened people across the country.

According to a press release from the grocery store chain, Giant Eagle has a register block on the products so they can’t be purchased by accident and has been removing them from the shelves. The release also noted that stores began reaching out to customers who purchased the products to give them refund instructions on Sept. 11.  

Potentially affected Giant Eagle products include:

  • Honeysuckle ground turkey value pack, 3 pound               
  • Honeysuckle white ground turkey patties                   
  • Ground turkey
  • Garden vegetable turkey burger
  • Jalapeno turkey burger
  • Italian turkey burger

In its press release, Cargill recommended that customers return products to the stores they were purchased for a full refund. Any customers with questions can call the company’s consumer relations toll free number at 1-888-812-1646.
