Get Out: Make The Most Of Your Memorial Day Weekend

This weekend you can run (or walk) for charity, find a treasure or make your own!

It’s Thursday, and you have no idea what to unwind for the weekend. Don't worry; Patch is coming to your rescue! Check our picks for the activities to hit on your time off - you may just be able to do a little good for the community, too.

Why Go: Join other locals for a five mile run or 5K walk/run at the All-Pro Freight Stadium in Avon (just off I90) that benefits Avon Schools and your heart to boot! Bring the whole family to get out and enjoy some sunshine and get in your cardio while you're at it. The kids won't even know it's a workout! A one-mile "Fun Run" will be held for the kiddies after the race, so let them burn off their sugary breakfast cereal for a good cause. All racers get a voucher for a free Crushers game! 

Pricing: Adults $20 in advance; $25 day of race. Fun Run participants are $10 in advance and $15 day of race. All proceeds go to ASEEF.

Why Go: Pack up the kids and get their creative juices flowing with the monthly Crafts-a-GO-GO program. Children are able to create a fun, age- appropriate crafts... for free! From colorful pompoms to popsicle sticks and glitter galore, the Porter Public Library is the place to be! No pre-registration required, just show up with the young ones. Sign up at the Youth Services Desk.

Why Go: Join the folks at the Westlake Historical Society for a cellar and yard sale! This sale was originally scheduled for May 14, but got pushed back due to the rain. From knick-knacks to art and everything else (maybe even a kitchen sink!), you'll find something that you just can't live without at the sale, which benefits the Westlake Historical Society and helps them purchase preservation materials, acquisitions and utility costs. Free popcorn will be on hand for all.

Pricing: Free admission 

Where/When: ; 10:30 a.m., Sunday, May 29

Why Go: Join other locals at this popular grill and bar for a delicious brunch and watch on as ESPN Radio broadcasts LIVE from the bar stage! Listen to the sports talk and take part in the festivities as you and your family and friends enjoy a delicious brunch of eggs, bacon, toast, waffles, French toast, sausage and more! 

Pricing: Free admission; food and drinks extra. 

Where/When: Pat Catan's Craft Store in Strongsville, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Fridays and Saturdays  

Why Go: Kids and grown ups alike can take their favorite footwear to a whole new level at Pat Catan's Flip Flop Fridays and Saturdays event! The whole family can purchase a pair of summer flip flop sandals from the store and decorate them for free with their favorite glitzy, glittery, colorful, fluffy and shiny craft supplies to make their flip flops truly unique! 

Pricing: Purchase the flip flops ($5-$10) and decorate them with Pat Catan's supplies for free.
