Community Members Volunteer at Hospice Center on National Day of Service

Several local residents have volunteered to participate in the 2013 National Day of Service on Saturday, Jan. 19, by helping hospice patients and their families at Ames Family Hospice House.

At the hospice house, community residents will host a homemade soup luncheon for patients, families, caregivers and visitors in the Great Room, and will create handmade cards to give to veterans being cared for by Hospice of the Western Reserve.

Residents in Avon, Avon Lake and Westlake are invited to volunteer.

Ames Family Hospice is seeking new volunteers and will be starting education classes soon. In addition to the luncheon and card making for veterans, the center will have information available for those interested in assisting.

The National Day of Service commemorates the life and legacy of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.  with acts of service at the local, state and national levels.

Chelsea Clinton serves as honorary chair of this year’s event, which kicks off the Second Inaugural weekend of President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden.

 “For those in hospice care and their families, compassion and a friendly face make all the difference.  We’re so grateful for the kindness and support from the local community,” Lisa Gallagher, Director of Volunteers, said. “It’s not only a wonderful way to honor the Rev. Dr. King’s legacy of service, but it means a lot to families coping with a very difficult time in their lives.”
