Time Capsule Closes For 100 Years On Thursday

The Westlake Historical Society will bury the capsule at Evergreen Cemetery.

Photos, newspaper clippings and more Westlake memorabilia will be sealed inside a steel time capsule at 6 p.m. at City Hall.

And this time capsule is built to last. Historical Society President Lysa Stanton said it will be equipped with argon gas and made of steel, and then placed inside a vault before it’s buried.

Hopefully, Westlake residents will open the capsule on the city's tricentennial in 2111. A sister time capsule will be buried alongside, to be opened in 2036 and every 25 years after that. That way any outdated technology can be updated as needed.

The historical society is asking for ideas and suggestions for the time capsule, which will have all kinds of things from a copy of the Westlake charter to popular CDs or DVDs and other items that represent the year 2011, as well as Westlake's 200-year history.

“If people can think of thing they think should be in the capsule, we’re open to suggestions and we’ll fill it until it’s full,” Stanton said.

To make a suggestion, contact the Westlake Historical Society at 440-721-1201 or westlakehistory@yahoo.com.
