Teacher Feature: Art Daniels Voted Exemplary Educator
Daniels says he tries to make a positive influence in each student's life every day.
For over 30 years, Art Daniels has taught his students and players that victors aren’t the only winners.
Winners learn the game, hone skills, attain goals big and small, overcome adversity and, most importantly, they have fun and draw positive experiences from their time on the court and on the field.
With a perspective like that, it’s no wonder why Daniels has led such a successful teaching and coaching career at Westlake High School.
Daniels won a state title as the boys head basketball coach in the 90’s, was named SWC coach of the year, has co-chaired Westlake high’s health and physical education department, sat as vice president on the Greater Cleveland Basketball Coaches Association and has spent the last six years coaching varsity girls basketball, Westlake school PR specialist Kim Bonvissuto said.
And to top it off, he was recently voted exemplary educator of the year by his fellow teachers and staff at WHS.
“You get an opportunity to speak to the senior class at their graduation and I think that’s just an awesome opportunity to be able to do that,” he said. “I’ll be one of the last people who gets a chance to say something that, hopefully, makes a difference in their lives.”
In the years ahead, Daniels plans to conclude his teaching career by 2014, but is planning on remaining courtside as a coach for the foreseeable future.
