Should High School Asbestos Removal Happen During School Year? POLL

Asbestos removal could begin in April, while school is still in session

To keep on-schedule with the construction of the new Westlake High School, plans are being considered that would have asbestos removal at the current high shool begin in April, while classes are still in session.

The plan is to start in the music rooms, then move on to the main gymnasium, said Dave Puffer, supervisor for construction projects for Westlake City Schools.

The district is on a tight schedule with the demolition of the current school. Classes are scheduled to end on May 31, 2013, and the school should be demolished before the 2013-14 school year begins in the new high school on Sept. 3, 2013.

Asbestos, which was used in ceiling tiles, is connected with lung diseases such as lung cancer and mesothelioma.

Puffer said anyone who has questions about the asbestos removal can contact him at Puffer@Wlake.org or by phone at 440-250-1299.
