Sears Grand To Become Kmart

The new superstore will open Feb. 22.

The Sears Grand store at the West Bay Shopping Center will return to being a Kmart next month as part of the company's larger plans to close 100 to 120 Kmart and Sears stores.

"Given our performance and the difficult economic environment, especially for big-ticket items, we intend to implement a series of actions to reduce on-going expenses, adjust our asset base, and accelerate the transformation of our business model," said Chief Executive Officer Lou D'Ambrosio in a release. "These actions will better enable us to focus our investments on serving our customers and members through integrated retail— at the store, online and in the home."

The building will undergo renovations next month, and the new Kmart will be open by late February, according to Sears Holdings representatives. The store was converted from a Kmart to a Sears Grand in 2005.

All Kmart employees will be able to interiew for jobs at the new Kmart, Sears officials said. Store employees declined to comment.

"I think this is great," said Karen Zydick, who was heading into the store with her two daughters. "I remember when this used to be a Kmart, and I shopped here a lot more often. I'll be back when it opens, that's for sure!"

Good news. Sears Grand was always empty. I don't know how they stayed open as long as they did - and such an odd and patchy assortment of merchandise. I'd much rather have a KMart.
