Regal Cinema Weapons Suspect Still in Jail

Scott A. Smith awaits charges after arrest for bringing gun, ammunition, knives to showing of 'The Dark Knight Rises' at Crocker Park movie theater

Updated 5:35 p.m.

Scott A. Smith remains in Cuyahoga County jail Wednesday afternoon, awaiting formal charges after his Saturday arrest for bringing a gun, ammunition and four knives into a late-night showing of The Dark Knight Rises at Regal Cinema.

Smith's attorney, Matthew Bruce, anticipated a bond hearing Wednesday, but it did not happen.

Nicole DiSanto of the Cuyahoga County Prosecutor's Office said Wednesday that Scott would remain in jail until formal charges are made. According to the Cuyahoga County Court of Common Pleas website, a formal hearing has been set for 1:45 p.m. Friday. No charges are listed on the docket.

Information is still coming in from the investigation by Westlake Police, DiSanto said. A grand jury will be convened to decide charges, but DiSanto was unsure when that would happen.

Smith was taken to county lock-up on Tuesday afternoon. He had been in jail in Westlake since Saturday night, when off-duty Westlake police officer Jeremiah Bullins searched Smith's Maxpedition bag and found a loaded 9MM Glock semiautomatic handgun, two addition loaded magazines, and three knives. A fourth knife was found on Smith.

Initial charges for the arrest were carrying various weapons, carrying a concealed weapon and having weapons under disability.

Bruce said Wednesday that Smith brought the weapons into the theater for self-defense, not to hurt anyone.

In another case of weapons and The Dark Knight Rises, police in New Haven, Conn., arrested Sung H. Hwang for bringing a gun into a Tuesday screening of The Dark Knight Rises at Criterion-Bow Tie Cinemas.

wow..how sad to hear and read about sick people so close to home here in Cleveland.
I just saw CH 8 interviewing his defense attorney and he seems to post about the same amount of truth as Smith says, "I wanted to be safe watching the movie". What a crock. Who goes to the movies an hour early with a hand bag loaded with weapons? Sicko's, that's who.

It will be interesting to see if you still say "sicko" after the psych evils are cleared and the case CONTINUES to fall apart in court. Then, after the lies have been told, and the damage done, how does one get back to normal? The police and the media are not telling everything, but I invite everyone to continue judging, we all know what the bible says about that.

hey joe see, i always carry my gun when i'm in a crowded place. i have a pa. permit to carry concealed. as for bringing it to a movie, of course, its like putting on a belt or shoes for me. now regal has a policy regarding weapons and at best all they can do is ask you to leave. if you don't comply then you could receive a tresspassing fine. side not: the dopes where searching at the ticket entrance. the colorado gunman brought his throught the exit.
