Paul Ryan: Obama Has America in 'Decline'
Westlake Recreation Center hosts appearance by the GOP vice-presidential candidate.
Nicole Miller of Lorain is 28, has finished nursing school recently, is unemployed, engaged and pregnant.
Her life experiences are what led her to stand in line to attend Tuesday's rally featuring Republican vice-presidential candidate Paul Ryan at the Westlake Recreation Center.
"I'm scared about everything," she said. "I'm worried about my baby in this world we live in. When people can't find jobs, crime goes up. People start losing their minds. I'm tired of seeing closed businesses and boarded-up homes where I live."
Her mom, Debbie Miller, agreed.
"I want jobs not just back here, but everywhere," she said. "I want the America of years ago back, those values. They're not just one religion's values, but all of our values."
The two were among a crowd of about 2,200 people who turned out on an overcast, humid morning for the rally, Ryan's second in Northeast Ohio in three weeks. He spoke at Walsh University in North Canton on Aug. 16.
Were you at the Paul Ryan rally in Westlake? Share your photos here! Click "Upload photos and videos" button to get started.
"President Obama and too many politicians like him are more concerned about their next election than the next generation," Ryan said. "We're going to lead."
Ryan's appearance in Westlake coincides the first day of the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, and Republicans plan to aggressively counter-program the Democratic confab, the Washington Post reports.
"President Obama inherited a difficult situation," Ryan said. "Here's the problem: He's made things worse. He can't run on his record. He's run out of ideas. His campaign is based on the politics of envy and division."
A heckler tried to interrupt Ryan's speech, but was promptly ejected by Westlake Police. About a dozen protesters chanted "You say 'cut back,' we say 'fight back!'" and held signs at the Hilliard Blvd. entrance to Recreation Center Park. A passer-by referred to the protesters and President Barack Obama as "communists."
Local politicians get crowd going
Westlake Mayor Dennis Clough said that America needs the Romney/Ryan ticket.
"We still have our AAA bond rating," he said. "Unfortunately, America does not. This should not be. Now is the time for a conservative, business-friendly environment so America can enjoy what Westlake has."
Brecksville Mayor Jerry Hruby's speech attacked President Obama, saying he has "failed."
"You have ignored the will of the people," Hruby said. "You have your own agenda ... You're fired!"
State Rep. Nan Baker, who represents District 16, said that Ohio is coming back on the job-creation front.
"It's not because of the policies of the Obama administration," she said. "It's because of what we've done here in Ohio."
U.S. Cong. Jim Renacci, who represents District 16, told the crowd that "big government," bailouts and Obamacare are not working. "In November, we'll be epicenter of change in Washington," he said.
Jobs, values draw people to rally
As the crowd filled the basketball courts at the Recreation Center, they were entertained with music ranging from Kenny Chesney to INXS to Kansas to Elvis Presley.
The only seats available were for elderly and disabled people, and VIP guests. What brought the rest out to stand in line on a humid morning, and then stand for up to two hours inside waiting for Ryan?
The economy and jobs were the most popular issues.
"We need to get the economy moving," said Darryl Haase of Cleveland's West Park. "There are storefronts that need to be filled."
Ryan has what it takes, he added.
"He's not a typical politician," Haase said. "He thinks things through, he has a good grasp of details and concrete ideas."
Values were often mentioned.
"I'm a very strong believer in God and the Constitution," said John Basler, visiting the area from Hawaii. "I had a great life growing up and want it passed on to the next generation to come."
"I like their stance on (supporting the defunding of) Planned Parenthood, support it 100 percent," Nicole Miler said.
A woman from North Olmsted, who gave her name as Marie, evoked the memory of her mother's family, which emigrated from Italy.
"They came here with nothing," she said. "They worked hard and sent their kids to school without any help from anybody."
Romney, Ryan and many speakers at the Republican National Convention last week resonated with her because of those values, Marie said.
Patriotism was another issue for her.
"This is the greatest country in the world, but we've lost respect in the world," she said. "That's on our leaders. If we're not proud of ourselves, we can't expect others to respect us."
Fresh off the Republican National Convention last week in Tampa, Ryan accepted the offer to become Mitt Romney's running mate on Aug. 11.
After the Rec Center rally, Ryan will head to Cedar Rapids, IA, for a rally at Kirkwood Community College.
Ryan is the second vice-presidential candidate to stop in Westlake recently. Libertarian vice-presidential candidate Jim Gray made an appearance at Dean's Greenhouse on Aug. 3.

Senate democrats pay women less for the same work their male counterparts do http://freebeacon.com/senate-dems-betray-lilly/ and haven't passed a budget since this administration took power. This is a fact even though both the House and Senate were democrat controlled for the first two years of this administration. Also, you had better go to http://www.senate.gov/legislative/LIS/roll_call_lists/vote_menu_112_2.htm for your non-partisan fact finding missions instead of ranting without showing proof. Also check the actual web site for the House side to find out that budgets and other bills have been passed there but the Senate, controlled by the democrats, refuse to vote on them. One thing this administration has been good for is keeping people on unemployment benefits, which in my personal experience pays less than working a full-time job, and drags down the economy by not creating more jobs. Good job Nick!

Not one word from Mitt Romney about strengthening the middle class in his republican convention... but it was more promises to repeal and revoke the new affordable healthcare plan [Obama-Care]...
Mitt Romney's acceptance speech revealed his priorities, and he mentioned veterans ZERO times, he mentioned the troops ZERO times, yet mentioned President Obama 23 times while beating the drums for a new
war
The speech was all about slamming President Obama, while it had No Substance, No Facts and No Fresh Ideas
The question is not are we better off now than we were four years ago...
The question is are we, and is our country better off today than it was before the bush tax cuts to the super rich elite??
Calling Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan's economic republican plan “a budget” is like calling a guillotine a surgical instrument
The Choice Is Clear..

Remember that "Team Obama" gave those tax cuts to the rich, so you are obviously being a hypocrite for failing to point out the full facts. Give credit to Obama for cutting the military though. Thousands of troops are losing their futures thanks to this administration, but you don't really care about veterans do you? Did you even serve in the military like a lot of us have?
Immigration reform could have been achieved by the democrats while they controlled both houses of congress and the presidency, but instead chose not enforce existing laws on the books. What reason was there that they did not do it while they had all that power? Why were they so focused on taking $700 billion out of Medicare to pay for their new plan? (http://www.forbes.com/sites/aroy/2012/08/13/yes-obamacare-cuts-medicare-more-than-president-romney-would/). They spent so much time on that single issue that the middle class suffered for lack of jobs. By the way, should you actually pay federal taxes, illegal immigrant families should be thanking you for your contribution to their "tax refunds". Harry Reid likes handing out taxpayer money for this purpose according to http://www.breitbart.com/Big-Government/2012/05/23/Sen-Reid-Blocking-Ban-On-4-Billion-Illegal-Immigrant-Tax-Credit-Loophole.

What was passed when the Dems had control of the House and Senate? Oh that's right - Affordable Health Care act with NO bipartisan talk and/or input. Maybe the fact that during an administration in which we were spending well beyond our means we should have had some people in Washington saying NO and "blocking" new spending from hitting the street. The success of an administration should not be the number of new government programs they can get in from of the house. Also - Nick, your ight want to double check but a fair number of Dems also "blocked" many of these proposals - even the presidents own party is saying Enough is Enough...we have to stop the spending

My natural gas bill was out of control. Today, we are adding jobs every month. My 401k is back to a point where I am no longer afraid to open the statements. Our brave men and women are out of Iraq. http://articles.marketwatch.com/2012-05-22/commentary/31802270_1_spending-federal-budget-drunken-sailor
Excerpt:
In the 2009 fiscal year — the last of George W. Bush’s presidency — federal spending rose by 17.9% from $2.98 trillion to $3.52 trillion. Check the official numbers at the Office of Management and Budget.
• In fiscal 2010 — the first budget under Obama — spending fell 1.8% to $3.46 trillion.
• In fiscal 2011, spending rose 4.3% to $3.60 trillion.
• In fiscal 2012, spending is set to rise 0.7% to $3.63 trillion, according to the Congressional Budget Office’s estimate of the budget that was agreed to last August.
• Finally in fiscal 2013 — the final budget of Obama’s term — spending is scheduled to fall 1.3% to $3.58 trillion. Read the CBO’s latest budget outlook.
Over Obama’s four budget years, federal spending is on track to rise from $3.52 trillion to $3.58 trillion, an annualized increase of just 0.4%.

All these raw jobs numbers mean little outside the context of unemployment rates. Job growth has to keep pace with the expanding adult population in order for the gains to be sufficient.

Setting and achieving goals is critical for the success of any administration. A competent president has the ability to bring together opposing parties to create laws that are good for the majority of people. The past four years have certainly indicated Obama is incapable of realizing this goal. As Michelle said last night, "being President doesn't change who you are, it reveals who you are". Melissa you make a great point but Sadly the Obama supporters think they have the second coming in office right now. He can do no wrong of course, yet he still covets lobbyists in the White House with NO transparency of why they visit. Something he said he wouldn't do. He continues to add to the National debt, something he said he'd cut in half. He confiscated GM and the healthcare system for Government ownership right in front of everyones eyes through lies and deception. He, along with the Directors at Fannie Mae have accelerate the collapsed of the housing industry. He and his congress and senate of democrats have set in motion a precise, deliberate attempt to overload the system for political gain and collapse the economy. (google Cloward-Pivens) He has rammed through an executive order to let immigrants enter the U.S illegally, against the laws we have in place, putting more people on Government handouts . He's crippled our energy industry by shutting down refineries and oil production in the gulf, as well as potentially being close to bankrupting the Coal industry. So I ask myself, how could Obama voters be dumb enough to want more of this? Just because someone disagrees with the current president or his policies doesn't mean that they do so because of the color of his skin. Just because someone strongly believes that larger, more controlling federal government isn't the correct answer to all the country’s problems doesn't mean that they hate the poor or are greedy.
Also, please keep in mind that the second term for any president from either party is never as successful as the first term. This was true for GWB, Clinton, Reagan, and the list goes on and on. Congress becomes more concerned with elections than with the lame duck president early in the second term and digs in their heels even more. There is no evidence that a second Obama term would be any different. Further, Obama associates have said that in private, Obama acknowledges that his biggest mistake in his first term was trying to work with Republicans and that he won’t make that mistake again in a second term. Since it is unlikely that the house will go Democrat and there is a possibility that the Senate will be evenly divided (or possibly Republican) you can expect even more divisiveness in an Obama second term.

Nicole Miller, Crime does not always increase when unemployment increases. One of the things President Clinton and President Obama did was to increase federal funds to keep police officers on task and working in their communities. This helps keep crime down. Sadly, the Republicans see this as wasting taxpayer dollars and fight to cut the community policing funds.

Steve Rosen - you state that Obama has added jobs. Where? Are we talking about the temporary construction jobs, out of the Recovery Act, that won't last more than 9-12 months? How do you defend the unemployment rate, which doesn't include those who have given up on work. It doesn't include those that have had to turn to SSI instead. Show us where these jobs are, don't just make a blanket statement to those who are living it. Real jobs are needed, regardless of who you support - these are the facts.
Steve Rosen

Holly, first of all, all construction jobs are by nature temporary. Once a project is built, the construction ends. Here is a link to a chart indicating private sector job growth. The recovery act also paid local schools to keep teachers on the payroll and to improve their energy usage, saving local taxpayers money.
http://www.barackobama.com/jobsrecord
As far as underemployment or people who have given up looking, I don't remember ever hearing the Republicans speak of such things under prior administrations. Although at one point I do remember President Bush commenting on a woman who had to work two jobs to try to make ends meet by saying something along the lines of, and I am paraphrasing here "...that's the American way." But you try to keep moving the goal line, that's a fine strategy to try to confuse the American voters, but they are smarter than that. They know to go forward you put a car in D and to go backwards you put it in R. The same holds true for our economy.

I say Romney / Ryan are extreme because I'm a woman and I don't want to be knocked back into to the 19th century. They shouldn't worry about what I do to my body, it's mine. And they shouldn't make ignorant statements about what can or can't happen to a womens body when it's under duress. Romney had a good track record with women and our rights before the tea party got ahold of him and forced him to chose someone as extreme as Ryan for his running mate. The economy should be front and center in this election and instead it's become a war on women. There were so many more moderate candidates available but he chose Ryan, it will be his undoing.

The media along with Obama can't run a successful campaign on his record of nothingness over 4 years so they have to run a negative bitter fictitious campaign on something divisive. "They shouldn't worry about what I do to my body, it's mine." While I have opinions on what one should do and shouldn't do to their bodies, I will refrain from giving them here.
It is your body, and you can choose to do what you want with it. Your choices may have consequences. Others should not have to pay for those consequences. My tax dollars should not go to supplying contraception or abortions for those that cannot appropriately manage the care of their bodies.
One side thinks killing innocent life is bad. The other thinks that government funding of killing innocent life is good. If something is good, we would want more of it. Does anybody really want more abortions (aside from Margret Sanger and Planned Parenthood)? Conversely, if something is bad, we would want less of it. If you think that there should be less, not more abortions, than you should also be opposed to the government funding of them.

MZ you are drinking the Fox News kool aid again. The government is not now, nor is there any law on the books nor is there any planned law which causes tax Dollars to pay for abortions or contraception. When the President issued his order on birth control it said that if a company supplied medical coverage for their employees which included prescription coverage, it must also cover birth control. And if there was a copay involved, the insurance company must waive the copay for it. No tax money involved in any way. Take the blinders off sometime and use the internet for research. You just might actually look educated.

If you did research the subject you would find out that Planned Parenthood is just what it's name implies. It helps women who are having trouble getting pregnant, it helps poor and working poor women have healthy children by way of free pre-natal care and also offers free or reduced cost birth control. Less than 5% of Planned Parenthoods services are abortions, probably about the same as most hospitals.
MZ

Bill, quick Internet research shows that planned parenthood perform 40%'of abortions. The 5% figure has been widely discredited. Oh yeah, these aren't from Fox news but thanks for trying.
Thanks for clearing up that Obama has forced any company that provides health coverage for prescriptions also must provide abortions. That is awesome! So what happens when companies begin to drop the coverage to pay the much less expensive fines and the employees have to go on the government program? Aren't tax dollars going to support that?
Obama says that prescription drugs = abortions! I am sure that our senior citizens will be happy to know that money that could be spent on prescription medications will be used for abortions that they have no risk of needing.

Bill, my post should have said 40% of revenues.
Annual abortions performed at Planned Parenthood: 332,278
Source: Planned Parenthood 2009 services fact sheet
Average cost of abortion: $468
Source: Guttmacher Institute estimate
Total income from abortions: $155,506,104
Total health center income: $404,900,000
Source: Planned Parenthood 2009 annual report
This means that fully 38.4% of Planned Parenthood health center income comes directly from abortions.

Obama in just 3 1/2 years has already created more private sector jobs than George W Bush did his entire 8 years. The reason why there are still so many unemployed is because States and Cities have made drastic cuts in their employees because of reduced tax revenues. Had the Republican Congress done what it was elected to do and passed a jobs bill maybe those workers could have been rehired. FYI: More people working=more tax revenue.
MZ
7:02 pm on Wednesday, September 5, 2012
More people working government jobs equals more tax money to pay them. Every government job (including benefits) costs far more than the federal taxes collected from an individual making $250K.
How would the states and cities hiring millions of people fix the revenue problem? Pay someone $50k plus benefits to collect a fraction of that back in taxes? The math doesn't work my friend.

Please don’t get me wrong, government has a valued place in our society and I am not an anarchist who thinks every man for himself is the way to go, it’s not. Tens of thousands of pages of tax code, thousands of repetitive laws, regulation on top of regulation, and knee jerk reactions are not helpful for a free society.

Listen, you need to pick one. Either pay for the abortion of the 13 year old girl who was rapped by her father or pay their welfare tab... you can't have it both ways. I don't want abortion to be used like birth control either, that's repulsive, but in cases of rape, incest, or detrimine to the mother then they are absolutely necessary. Period. End of story. No further discussion (especially from a man) needed. And YES, Ryan is ON RECORD supporting a ZERO tolerance for abortion. No he didn't make the retarded argument about a womans body stopping itself from getting pregnant during rape but he wrote an abortion bill with the moron who did so his views can't be that far off. DUH!

I have two daughters and a beautiful wife. I am sorry that a comment from someone you have never met makes you physically ill; perhaps you should seek some help.
Nowhere did I speak of rape. I am not sure why your mind went there. Weird.
The number of abortions for pregnancies resulting from rape is rather small compared to the overall number of abortions. Do you dispute this fact? Abortions performed to save the life of the mother are even rarer. Do you dispute this fact? So that leaves us with the vast majority of abortions being performed for what reason? Perhaps consenting adults made a bad “choice.” Perhaps they followed up that bad “choice” with another “choice.”
We have all made bad decisions or choices in our lives, we all choose to deal with them in different ways. I won’t ask you to pay for any bad choices I make if you don’t ask me to pay for yours. Deal?
On a side note, I would much rather kill the rapist than kill the innocent victim of the rape (either the mother, or the unborn), but that is just me.

I saw Obama yesterday claiming the new job numbers are proof that his policies are working and that we are in an economic recovery... Fact is, that is not the truth, or even close to the truth...
First, the unemployment rate ticked up to 7.9% and the year-to-date monthly average of 157,000 payroll jobs is barely enough to keep up with population growth -- much less make up for the 8 million jobs lost during the Great Recession.
Second, the so-called real unemployment rate (U6) remains elevated at 14.6%, albeit down from 14.7% the prior month. Similarly, the labor participation rate is at 63.8%, up from its multi-decade low but still incredibly weak.
Third, average hourly earnings fell a penny in October and average hours worked fell to 34.4 from 34.5 in September.
Stagnant wages means "we're not generating income," Reinhart says. "That's a problem in terms of the durability of an economic expansion, which is usually fueled by consumption. To get consumption you've got to generate income."
Also, just look at your checkbook. We are paying a lot more for everything now than we did in 2008. The price of gas has doubled. At the same time, wages have gone down, and that's if you're lucky to have a job.
In 2008, 25 banks went out of business. In 2012, 48 banks have gone out of business. Almost double the amount. Does that sound like recovery to you? Don't believe the Obama lies!!
