North Coast Challege Brings Fun, Road Closures

Local organizations benefit from annual race

A Westlake tradition continues Saturday with the 22nd annual North Coast Challenge.

The 5-mile run and 2-mile walk begin at 8:30 a.m. on Center Ridge Road. The University Hospitals Kids' Fun Run will be at 9:45 a.m.

St. John Medical Center is the home base for the event, which also includes a health expo, refreshments, entertainment, children's activities and prizes.

The race is a community event, for the community, said race director Dave Camerino.

"A lot of things make this special," he said. "The community, the volunteers, the sponsors, the committee members, the charities."

The race started as a way to support local charities and organizations. Those benefiting over the years include Westlake Kiwanis, Westlake Police DARE Unit, WHBS-Television, Westlake Porter Library, Westlake Fire DepartmentWestlake Senior Center, Westlake Recreation Center and West Shore YMCA.

If you want to run the race or participate in the walk, it's not too late. Registration on race day is $20 and opens at 7 a.m. at St. John Medical Center.
