Nordson earned an environmental honor this week as its world headquarters on Clemens Road was given a LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Silver certification.

LEED is the U.S. Green Building Council's rating system for environmentally-friendly buildings.

Silver certification means that the Nordson headquarters scored between 50 and 59 points in the U.S. Green Building Council ratings. Points are awarded for such things as protecting and restoring natural habitats on the property, reducing light pollution, water efficient landscaping, energy efficiency, indoor air quality and recycling while building.

Ozanne, the contractor on the project, recycled 95 percent of the waste generated during construction.

Other green features include a partial green roof planted with native vegetation, a parking lot and landscape design that mitigates storm water generation, and regionally sourced and recycled construction materials.

"Our headquarters' environmentally friendly construction and features are consistent with our corporate philosophy and values, which include an emphasis on creating long-term benefits for the communities where we operate," said Michael F. Hilton, Nordson President and CEO, in a statement released by the company.

The 28,000 square-foot Nordson world headquarters was opened in November 2010.
