New Westlake High School Taking Shape
Tour of construction project shows the progress
Now that Westlake High School students and staff are back at school, they can watch their new high school going up right next door.
Mark Zuk, superintendent for the Lee Burneson Middle School project for Turner Construction, gave a tour of the high school construction project.
The gymnasium walls are up, and interior work such as plumbing has begun there. The steel frame for the rotunda-style entry is going up. The floors will be tinted and polished concrete.
As the walls go up, Zuk said, workers from different trades work side-by-side in a carefully-planned effort. Mechanical work like plumbing and electrical are being installed while masons are putting up the concrete block walls.
An archway will connect the new school to a community arts room that will feature community artwork. The archway will be done in red brick in honor of the old Red Brick School. Red brick is a dominant look in the school, from the exterior facade to pillars in the media center.
The new high school will open for the start of the 2013-14 school year.
