'Dark Knight' Weapons Suspect Pleads Guilty On 2 Charges, Still Faces A Third

Scott A. Smith has pleaded to counts of carrying concealed weapons but disputes that he was carrying a weapon under a disability

Scott Smith -- the man caught carrying a Glock 9mm semi-automatic pistol, 4 knives and various medical supplies into a Westlake theater -- pleaded guilty to two counts of carrying concealed weapons today in Cuyahoga County Court of Common Pleas, according to The Huffington Post.

Smith, 38, of North Ridgeville, will still contest a third count of having weapons under a disability when his trial begins Wednesday.

The disability, in this case, is a drug dependency, according to prosecutors.

Smith's attorney, John Hildebrand, told The Huffington Post that his client's change of plea was not part of a plea deal. Instead, he pleaded guilty to the two weapons counts based upon the evidence.

Smith entered the Regal Cinemas in Westlake on Aug. 4, 2012 carrying a Maxpedition bag, which is commonly used to transport firearms.

An off-duty officer inside the theater noticed the suspect carrying the bag and followed him into the I-Max Theater, which was showing the movie Batman.

Once inside the theater, the officer approached Smith and requested to see the bag he had in his possession. A search of the suspects bag revealed the weapons and supplies. Smith was then placed under arrest.

Smith's lawyer claimed the weapons were for self-defense.

The incident came on the heels of the July 20, 2012 shooting in Aurora, CO that left 12 dead and dozens injured.
