Updated 2:32 p.m.

Interstate 90 westbound has been reopened after an investigation was done into a construction worker being struck and fatally injured at the Nagel Road interchange project in Avon.

I-90 from Crocker Road in Westlake to Route 83 in Avon was shut down after the accident, which happened around 9:15 a.m. It reopened shortly after 2 p.m.

Avon Fire Dept. Lt. Eric Dudziak told Avon/Avon Lake Patch the construction worker, 63 years old, was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.

All traffic on I-90 west was routed off the highway at Crocker Road and detoured to Route 83. Westlake Patch Facebook friend Ashley Candan reported that I-90 west was completely jammed from at least Clague Road west to Crocker early in the afternoon.

Traffic in Westlake was very heavy on Detroit Road west of Crocker into Avon.

Lt. Dudziak said inital reports are that the accident involved two vehicles. It is believed that one hit the other, which hit the worker.

Don Damyanic, the city of Avon's manager for the Nagel interchange project, said that he believed the worker was working on the bridge. According to WOIO, the worker was putting tarps in place ahead of painting work when he was struck around 9:15 a.m.
