City Cancels Meeting to Discuss American Greetings Contractor

Committee of the Whole was scheduled to meet tonight

Updated 12:19 p.m.

There's another delay in getting the American Greetings World Headquarters at Crocker Park started.

The city's Committee of the Whole -- which includes Mayor Dennis Clough, City Council and city department heads -- was scheduled to meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday at City Hall to discuss hiring a contractor for the city's share of the project. The meeting was cancelled just after noon onTuesday.

A tentative meeting remains for Dec. 3. No time is set. Another meeting date or time could be set, said Clerk of Council Denise Rosenbaum.

City Council, which needs to approve the contractor, is scheduled to next meet Dec. 6.

Turner Construction was the low bid at $54,050,132. Panzica bid $59,989,259. Whiting-Turner bid $60,456,030.73. Higley bid $60,921,790.46.

The city's responsibility in the project includes streets, utilities such as water and sewer lines, parking lots and garages, and off-site projects such as street and utility work near the site.

Once the contractor is approved, the city will sell bonds and arrange financing. After the money for the project is set and the contract is signed, work on the project can begin as early as January.

American Greetings announced in May 2011 that the company would be moving its world headquarters from its current location in Brooklyn to the Crocker Park site. The preliminary development plan for the project was submitted this past summer and approved by the city in September.

I hope they find a way to improve rush hour access to I-90 west for Crocker northbound traffic. They should also widen Detroit west of Crocker to Lear Nagle.

Thanks for the input, Chris! If you or anyone else have questions or comments about the American Greetings project, or traffic nearby, post it here. It could be a future story.

I agree with Chris about improving the traffic situation. There should also be 2 exit lanes off of I-90 westbound, like there are for Columbia. Traffic currently backs way up on 90, creating a serious safety hazard.

I think that American greetings should just come to chagrin highlands in beachwood. They are business friendly with a great tax base for business. they are close to 271 and 480 interstate.
