Andrew Zajdler, Polish Resistance Fighter

Spent eight months in prison camp after participating in Warsaw Uprising

 

Andrew Zajdler, 88, of Westlake, died Nov. 3.

He was born July 16, 1924 in Poland.

Zajdler was active in the Polish Resistance during World War II and served in the Home Army. After participating in the Warsaw Uprising in August of 1944, Zajdler spent eight months in a prisoner of war camp.

After the war, Zajdler married Halina Rutkowski in Germany in 1946. He finished college in London then moved to the United States with Halina in 1952.

Zajdler held many engineering jobs over his career. He was active with the Cleveland Chapter of his Home Army and its Veterans. He also enjoyed nature, camping and fishing.

In addition to his wife, Zajdler is survived by children Peter (Debbie) and Yolanda; granddaughters Sara and Teresa; and many cousins and friends.

Calling hours are 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 9, at Busch Funeral Home in Avon. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 10, at Holy Trinity Church in Avon followed by interment at Sunset Memorial Park, 6265 Columbia Rd., North Olmsted.
